Chapter 12

Kamau

Iwent to my room after leaving Kaleedah at her door. Tré had claimed his space in the two-room suite, dropped his enormous backpack, and was heading out.

“We’re gonna talk about the woman who’s only a friend later,” he said, practically running me over on the way out. “But right now a few of my boys are online and I’m ‘bout’ta whoop they asses.”

I went to the garage and grabbed my gym bag with Tré’s cursing at his gaming buddies booming through the hallway. It took a shitload of restraint and willpower not to go back to her door. And as someone who had struggled with drug addiction for years, willpower was not my strong suit. I wanted Kaleedah Freeman. My body ached from wanting her—something I’d been denying since the day we’d met. She made me want to step up my game, even though I didn’t think I had a chance with her.

I woke early and went to the gym in the building before going to the garage to check the cars. During the night I’d realized that whoever this person was knew the ins and outs of the building, which meant they probably knew the garage. I gave Kaleedah’s car a once over to make sure it was fine before heading back to my bed.

Tré and I had not discussed how long he would stay. He’d bought a one-way ticket—using my credit card. My cousin was what I called a look-like-he-broke dude. He had money, allowed others to think he didn’t, then stayed quiet when they paid the bill. He was in no rush to get back to Seattle and since there was plenty of space where I lived, I was in no hurry for him to leave. We’d probably be going back to Seattle at the same time once Carlos’s Miami assignment was done.

I’d given Carlos a call to let him know what was going on. Tré wanted to get a look at where we went over the freeway and the area where we landed. Carlos asked to join. Based on his girlfriend’s high-pitched voice in
